How Does the The Spark Development & Learning Program™ Work?

The Spark Development & Learning Program™ works on several distinct levels. First, we strengthen the foundational skills needed for academic success and better prepare the brain to learn. Second, we eliminate factors that may negatively impact attention and behavior. Finally, we can impart to our students new learning techniques, all the while providing them the care and encouragement they need to succeed.

Consider a baseball player. On a foundational level, he must possess the visual skills needed to track the flight of the ball. He also must possess the hand-eye coordination and muscular strength with which to swing the bat and make contact. Cognitively, he must be able to judge at what pitch to swing.

Second, he must not be distracted by extraneous noise or sights, and he certainly cannot concentrate properly if he is irritated in any way by the equipment he wears.

He also must be taught the best technique: that is, how he should stand and swing (of course, some techniques are better than others).

Finally, he must have worked hard and succeeded in practice so that he is confident in his skills when he steps up to the plate.

Likewise, a child must be physically and mentally prepared to learn before he or she steps into a classroom. Without proper foundational skills, learning content will be difficult. Also, while conventional wisdom has been that the majority of the brain’s functioning is established during the first few years of life, over the last decade, neuroscience has discovered that a person’s brain is continuously improvable when subject to the right conditions. The physical and mental exercises employed at Spark Development take full advantage of such neuroplasticity. In essence, we strengthen the brain's ability to learn.

One also must recognize that many of the children diagnosed with an attention, learning or behavior problem may simply be overly sensitive to their environment or suffer from nutrition/dietary issues that distract or irritate. Our Sensory Integration Room™ and nutrition counseling can help eliminate such distractions and irritations.

Finally, Spark Development is a place where every child is met with care and encouragement. We start each child at his or her level, and set incremental and attainable goals. Through their own effort and progress, our students discover success and confidence.
